ズビグニェフ・ヘルベルト (1924-1998)
1924年ポーランド領ルヴフ（現ウクライナ領リヴィウ）市生まれ、1998年ワルシャワ没。タデウシュ・ルジェーヴィチ、チェスワフ・ミウォシュ、ヴィスワヴァ・シンボルスカとともに20世紀後半のポーランド語詩を代表する詩人。60年代末以降ノーベル文学賞候補に挙がる。第１回「ヨーロッパ文学賞（オーストリア国家賞ヨーロッパ文学部門）」（1965）、イスラエルの「（社会の中の個人の自由のための）エルサレム賞」（1991）など数多くの文学賞を受賞。単行刊のエッセイ集に『庭園の野蛮人』（1962）、『轡のある静物』（1993）、『海辺の迷宮』（2000）、戯曲に『詩人の復元』、『哲学者たちの洞窟』、『隣の部屋』がある（『隣の部屋』のみ邦訳あり）。ポーランド国内の70以上の街路に《ヘルベルト通り》の名称が与えられているという。2024年9月、詩人の生誕100年を記念して、初めての日本語訳詩アンソロジー『ヘルベルト詩集』が未知谷から出版された。
Zbigniew Herbert (1924-1998)
Born in Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine), he died in Warsaw. Along with Tadeusz Różewicz, Czesław Miłosz and Wisława Szymborska, he was one of the most representative Polish poets in the second half of the 20th century. Since the late 1960s, he had been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He received numerous literary awards, including the first European Literature Prize (Austrian State Prize for European Literature) (1965) and the Jerusalem Prize (for the Freedom of the Individual in Society) (1991). His essay collections include Barbarian in the Garden (1962), Still Life with a Bridle (1993), and Labyrinth on the Sea-Shore (2000); his plays include "The Reconstruction of the Poet", "Cave of Philosophers" and "The Other Room" (only "The Other Room" has been translated into Japanese). It is said that more than 70 streets in Poland are named after him. In September 2024, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the poet's birth, the first anthology of Japanese translations of his poems was published by Michitani.
