Commemorating the publication of the Japanese translation of an autobiographical essay by Ilse Aichinger (1921-2016), three scholars of German literature convene to discuss her life and works.

An interactive discussion, based on author’s recent book The Good, the Bad, and the Miserable about Chiune Sugihara. By issuing in Lithuania “visas for life” in 1940 to war refugees, mainly of Jewish origin, Sugihara saved over 6000 human lives.

On the occasion of the publication of the 21st century Italian short stories anthology Somewhere, in a safe place (Kokushokankokai), Italian novelist Helena Janeczek dialogues with award-winning Japanese author Yoko Tawada. The dialogue is moderated by Katsuo Hashimoto, professor of Italian contemporary literature and translator of Helena Janeczek. Both authors read excerpts from their works.

Thomas Brussig, best known for his satirical works dealing with the fall of the German Democratic Republic, reads from his novel Wie es leuchtet and discusses his work with Mario Kumekawa (professor, Keio University) who has translated some of Brussig’s works into Japanese.

Sara Baume’s first novel Spill Simmer Falter Wither was highly acclaimed and translated into various languages around the world, including Japanese. Curious about the art of translation, the author will talk about the topic and how it relates to her works with Yoko Kato, the Japanese translator of Spill Simmer Falter Wither .

Pavel Brycz, a representative writer of contemporary Czech literature, will read from and discuss his works, including Co si vyprávějí andělé? (The angels alight every night, 2011), with Kenichi Abe, who has translated his works into Japanese.
