Redefining Literary Identities: Writing and Publishing in a Non-Native Language

Netherlands Netherlands

Institut français de Tokyo

Japanese only

In this unique talk, writers Miura Fumiko and Tettyo Saito, who have explored publishing in lesser-known European languages, will engage in a discussion moderated by Kyoko Yoshida, an author, translator, lecturer, and director of the Kyoto Writers Residency. They will delve into the nuances of language acquisition in both academic and everyday contexts, reflecting on how these experiences have influenced their writing, creative processes, perspectives, and even their reading habits.

The conversation will also address the contrasts between Japanese and European editorial practices, providing a rare insight into the differing literary landscapes. What are the societal and cultural perceptions of non-native writers in Europe and Japan? Are they welcomed by their adopted literary communities, or do they encounter distinct challenges? With a wealth of insight, expertise, and personal experience among these three speakers, this event promises to inspire and captivate any language and literary enthusiast.
