Estonia and Japan: Historical Texts of Estonian-Japanese Relations — Travelogues, Letters, and Articles
The event will explore the history of Estonian-Japanese relations from its very beginnings up to the present, focusing on the recently published book Estonia and Japan: Relations from the 19th Century to the Early 21st Century (2024) by Ene Selart (University of Tartu, Estonia) and translated into Japanese by Professor Hiromi Komori (Waseda University, Japan). The presentation will centre on the time scale and events in the course of the history of relations over 200 years, illustrated by samples of different texts from travelogues, letters, memoirs, and newspaper articles, providing unique insights into the interactions between a small European country and a world power from the perspective of common people who linked the two states throughout the years.
