Constantine P. Cavafy – The Alexandrian Beacon of Twentieth-Century European Literature
The event is by invitation only
Acclaimed Japanese author and translator Natsuki Ikezawa, a renowned expert on modern Greek literature, will introduce the Greek poet C.P. Cavafy (Alexandria, 1863–1933) and his distinctive body of work. Ikezawa will explore the unique qualities of Cavafy’s poetry and language, while also discussing the challenges involved in translating Cavafy into Japanese. The presentation will conclude with a short video featuring six contemporary Greek poets, each reciting a poem inspired by Cavafy’s enduring influence on modern Greek poetry. This event is organised as part of the 2024 Greece-Japan Year of Culture and Tourism, with financial support from the Onassis Foundation/Cavafy Archive.
